Lovely vinegar drinks

“Can I have a blueberry vinegar shake?” is a phrase you might hear at this new vinegar bar in Shinbashi Station. Admittedly, it’s not very likely as it’s a little known fact that most people in Japan actually speak Japanese, but ignore that for just now. Vinegar drinks are the latest drink craze in Japan, especially with older generations. Drinkable ‘black vinegar’ is mixed with various fruit juices, and is sold as a health drink, with claims that it lowers blood pressure.

These drinks (vinegar and soy milk, vinegar and blood orange juice, and a blueberry vinegar shake) are just some of those offered at the vinegar bar. This particular bar used to sell bento boxes, and since changing have tripled their income.

When I was a kid (many years ago) my grandparents were farmers. In the summer, the drink that sustained the farm workers in the fields was ginger beer. My grandma made gallons of it daily out of water, powdered ginger, sugar, and vinegar. I can still taste it, though I don’t think I’ve ever made it. It was surprisingly refreshing.
