PS3 processing time used to fight cancer
16th November, 2006 by stuart
Sony is set to ask owners of their new PlayStation 3 console to help out a Stanford University medical research project. By leaving the machines on and connected to the Internet, the university will be able to connect to the consoles and use them to analyze “vast amounts of raw data on human protein structures”, which is believed to help find effective drugs for diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer’s. Apparently, the PS3 has been chosen as it can perform 218 billion calculations per second - “about 20 times faster than a high-performance personal computer available on the market now”.
To participate, users will be required to download specifically designed software by connecting their PS3’s to the Internet.

I have a PS3, I did download the program, it is called “Folding@Home”. I would leave the PS3 running of that program and start folding proteins(I have no idea what’s going on, however it appears that the protein render are folding), but considering the amount of electricity it uses, I am unwilling. Also, there is no apparent way of communicating with people who is running the program, a chat room for example. It will definitely improve amount of people folding if you know what’s going on and maybe talk a bit.
