Japan’s second oldest elephant dies

Hanako

The second oldest elephant in captivity in Japan has sadly died after losing her balance and falling over. Hanako was 60-years-old, and had been very popular with visitors at the zoo since her arrival in 1953. In 1999, she refused to eat following the death of a fellow elephant in the zoo, which left her being the only elephant there. This did pass, thankfully, and her health had been good recently. A keeper said, “I expected her to live for several more years. It’s regrettable that the zoo lost its last elephant.” You’ll be missed Hanako!
