Sunday Snapshot: Train squeeze
29th January, 2007 by stuart
ZenzenOK was lucky enough to take this snap while waiting on a train platform one morning. I don’t think the guy in the photo has much chance of reading his newspaper! Please keep sending your links and photos to stuart [at] plasticbamboo.com. Every email is greatly appreciated!

Ah the memories…
I was riding a train like that once in Osaka, and would have been the guy holding the paper except for the seven-year-old girl standing between me and the door, who nobody else could see. Poor girl was probably terrified of the gaijin leaning over her, and everyone else was probably irritated at the nut-case (me) who was trying to push further into the train for no reason.
Luckily after a few stops she got off apparently without serious harm.

I was also on a commuter train like this in Tokyo. Being the tallest person there combined with between squished in on all sides made me start to laugh…and laugh…and laugh. Surprisingly, many of the very serious Japanese business men around me also began to giggle. I guess it was a ‘had to be there’ moment but definitely one I won’t forget.
Great site by the way! I’ll be back for more.

Do you think he got a friction burn when the doors opened? I’ve seen videos of guys pushing people into the trains but, I think this photo shows the foreigness of it better.
I’m sure it will be like that here one day though!
