Gameboy XP PC
9th May, 2007 by stuart
Some inventive oddbod has successfully fitted a fully functioning Windows XP PC inside an old Nintendo Gameboy. The device can be connected to a monitor via a normal VGA port, while you can browse the Internet using the built-in network connection. What’s more, they’ve added two USB ports and replaced the A and B buttons with LEDs showing power and activity. Windows XP is installed on a Compact Flash card that’s conveniently inserted into the Gameboy’s cart slot.
Next step is hopefully a nice new built-in LCD colour screen.
More photos after the jump.

Me thinks they used a via pico itx board. It messures 10 by 7 cm (so fits well into the gameboy) speeds are upto 1.5 ghz, but those need a fan for cooling, so maybe they used a 800mhz to 1ghz processor which can be cool fanless. It can be equipt with maximum one 1gb sodimm. Performance is decent, but don’t expect too much. Windows XP performs well on a flash drive as it benefits the low latencies of the drive, but some programs that need a high data bandwith and do not benefit from low latencies, will perform poor. But everyday programs and simple games will perform good on a system like this.

I really can’t understand why he didn’t made the mod any better. Openings for the VGA/LAN ports seem to be carved with a knife and why in the hell one would want to leave all that hot glue visible… Idea is nice but the execution of the mod itself is sad

A working LCD screen and a gb emulator on that flash drive will be all you need to reconstruct this gameboy!

For those who say that that doesn’t have a fan, it does. First picture.
I’m currently searching for a piece of junk in which to install an OS (or make an OS with assembly). Anyone got tips in what to use (no, I wont use an iPod)?
