Blow-up planets

Planetaroom

“Watch them float free and easy around your room. Just like a planetarium!” PlanetaRoom is basically a selection of beach balls that you can fill with helium and watch float around your house. Ok, there’s more to them than that. They have pictures of the earth and the moon on them. Great. Plus, once you’ve spend all day watching them float around and it gets dark, the earth will glow to either mimic the city lighting of the world or a map of the stars. Only 2,310 yen (£10/$20)?! Why doesn’t everyone have one of these yet? Oh, yeah, because it’s rubbish.

Piano in a can

If like me, you’re tired of carrying your grand piano around everywhere, then why don’t you pick up one of these canned pianos? Just pull out the little rolled up keyboard and away you go. You can’t play chords though, or sharps or flats. Happy little melodies all the time. The can comes with eight pre-programmed ditties and costs £4.40/$8.90. Oh, and it has a duck on the front. Quack.

Tengu

Solid Alliance has released Tengu, British designer Crispin Jones‘ USB marvel. Tengu is a little device with an LED face capable of showing seven different facial expressions that change if you blow on it. Just like what would happen if you blew on my face! If that doesn’t impress you then play some music to Tengu; it will lip-sync the words, just like on YouTube! Have a look and see what you make of it:

Tomy Shinkansen

Who wouldn’t want drive one of the fastest and safest trains in the world? Probably a few people, but even if they didn’t, their kids would love Takara-Tomy’s Shinkansen Simulator. Zip across Japan from the comfort of your living room via a little plastic box with some stickers on it. If I haven’t sold you on this one, just take a look at the commercial.

Tokyo Tower Scale Model

Tokyo Tower model

This isn’t the most interesting of items, but I thought I should post it just for the woman in the photo’s facial expression. Looking at her newly purchased model of Tokyo Tower, she seems proud, in disbelief of its beauty, and strangely, a little bit in love with it. She loves spending nights in alone with her model, changing the colour of the lights to match her mood. Ahh, 11,000 yen (£45/$90) well spent.

Pop-up Pirate USB Hub

USB Pop-up Pirate

Japan’s obsession with Pop-up Pirate is getting out of hand if you ask me. We’ve already had Hello Kitty and even Hard Gay forced into the barrel of swords. This time it’s the turn of the classic pirate, but now the simple stabbing game has the added bonus of acting as a 4-port USB hub as well. I’d rather the pirate popped with every random device you plugged in instead of the plastic swords, but I suppose you can’t have everything.

StrapYa are selling the one-eyed guy for 5000 yen (£20/$40).

Limited Edition Hello Kitty Grand Pianist

Hello Kitty Grand Pianist

Following the success of Sega Toys’ Grand Pianist, the company has decided to create a limited edition run of the mini piano. Featuring the world’s most famous mouthless cat, Hello Kitty, the fully functioning piano will go on sale in October for 68,250 yen (£276/$554).

Life Bank One yen counter

One-yen counter

I’m pretty sure every single person has a designated place for his or her mountains of change. It’s easy enough to chuck in your pennies when you get home, but the hassle comes when it’s time to count them, plus you can only guess at what your savings are as you go along. Fortunately, the Life Bank One bottle top is here! Screw it on to the top of any bottle and watch the counter increase as you save. Sadly, it only counts 1 yen coins. Looking at it I actually doubt that. I’m sure it just counts the number of coins, so larger denominations might be possible. Getting one for someone’s birthday present will cost you 999 yen (£4/$8), but I’m sure it would make them very happy.

Tiny Jenga

Not the most obvious of games to be made portable, Jenga can finally be with you wherever you go. Petit Jenga is a complete miniature Jenga set featuring a little “prodder” to assist the removing of blocks (your massive hands will be too big to remove with accuracy), as well as a little clear plastic carrying case that can be attached to your keys or belt loop if you’re a Jenga obsessive. Petit Jenga is 504 yen (£2.10/$4.20) from Strap-Ya.

Rody Kitty

We’ve already seen Pop-up Hard Gay, but now it’s Hello Kitty’s turn to get the pirate treatment. The Rody Kitty phone strap features a mini barrel and swords to eject pirate kitty into the air at random. Available in blue, yellow, pink and black, get one from Strap-Ya World for 798 yen (£3.30/$6.65).
